Teen Plano reflects on Mental Management Day

03.24.10

March 20, 2010

Hey Everybody!

Recently, our MPFO family gathered to attend the Mental Management seminar hosted by Heather Sumlin and conducted by two-time Olympic medalist and World Champion Lanny Bassham.  Such an encouraging and uplifting day!!  We learned so much about how preparing our minds for competition, whether it is for pageants, sports, jobs, or whatever we may be working toward, is the most critical step because it affects everything else we do to prepare.  As we learned about ‘proper’ goal setting, the importance of self-image and the difference between goals and wishes, I was amazed to find that so many of the things I worry about while I’m preparing for competition are things I don’t need to worry about—they are out of my control.  What an amazing opportunity to get a peek into the mind of an Olympian and to hear the stories of how Lanny was able to put himself in the position to succeed at such a high level.  He even allowed us to hold his gold and silver medals!!!!  Wow!!  If you have never had the chance to experience the Mental Management program, I would strongly encourage you to e-mail Heather Sumlin and find out more about it.

Lanny and Heather, thank you for a fantastic day!!!  I love you guys!!

Teen Frisco Makes Varsity Cheerleader!!

03.16.10

Wow! What a crazy week it has been! As many of you know I was on my high school cheer squad last year as a JV Cheerleader, and I loved every minute of it. I’m really involved in a lot of activities at my high school and cheerleading is one of my favorites.

This past Wednesday, we had try outs for next year’s squad. I was eligible this year to make Varsity, which is not an easy thing to do as an incoming sophomore. And I made Varsity Cheerleader!!! I’m so excited! This year there was a very large group of girls trying out for only 12 spots, so I am very grateful to be one of those!

But what I am the most excited about is the scores I made. Of all the incoming freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors…I was the 2nd highest score of them all, coming in only .11 from the top score! I worked so hard leading up to this event, and I proved to myself that hard work does pay off! With enough determination and hard work, dreams can come true!  I would also like to point out how great Mental Management really is! During tryouts I used the strategies I was taught Saturday at our seminar and I cannot believe how helpful it was! It really does show in so many ways! I was able to be calm and relax before trying out, and it’s all because of the skills I learned through Mental Management! So I would like to say a quick thanks again to Heather and Lanny! Thanks also to my MPFO family for the great support! Well I am so glad to have cheer tryouts behind my back, next stop….Miss Teen Texas!!!

Teen Frisco reflects on “Gold” from Mental Management day

03.16.10

It’s not every day that you have the opportunity to sit down with an Olympic Gold Medalist and listen to stories about his experiences in the Olympics! Although I attended the Mental Management seminar last year, this year was a whole new experience for me! I learned so much more about controlling the mental phase of competition and I’m excited to apply it in my everyday life! Mr. Bassham and Heather are two of the neatest people I have ever met, and I’m so very thankful to be a part of the MPFO, because of opportunities such as this one that we are given. It was an excellent day and very productive! The four title holders got to listen to 1976 Olympic gold Medalist, Lanny Bassham talk about his experiences in the Olympics. We heard numerous outstanding stories, and then learned how to control our own mental game. Lanny and Heather both taught us so much and I know come July I will not only be physically and technically ready, but I will also be mentally prepared!

One of the coolest parts of the day was getting to hold real silver and gold Olympic Medals. Mr. Bassham was kind enough to bring them out to show to us, and we even got to take a picture with them! I will never forget that experience!

Thank you so much to Mental Management for supporting the Miss Plano Frisco Organization! I learned so much from Saturday and will use what I learned in my life every single day!

God Bless,

Madison
