Platform: EmPOWERing Students Against Bullying

In today’s schools a major cause of stress for students is the fear of being taunted, facing peer pressure, intimidation or harassment. You may be thinking lots of kids joke around, call each other names, or engage in physical horse-play. Yet many times incidents like these are not deemed as bullying because after all, kids will be kids. How can we tell it is truly bullying? We can tell from the relationship of the bully, who is seeking power, and the victim as well as the intent of the interaction. Bullying is comprised of a series of repeated, intentional cruel incidents involving the same child in the same bully and victim role. However bullying can consist of a single interaction and if the bully is twelve years of age or older the incident could be defined as a criminal act.

Bullying is not a problem that usually sorts itself out. Unfortunately some 160,000 students miss school each day because of a bully situation. This type of behavior knows no cultural, social or financial bounds and may not look exactly the same everywhere. However, no matter where this intentional act takes place it has the same devastating effect on everyone. The effects last a lifetime and causes misery for the victims leaving a lasting impression on all those who witness repeated bullying incidents as well.

A student sees, hears and knows things adults don’t. What is important to remember is if the problem is ignored it can endanger a student’s academic ability, undermine their physical and emotional health and could produce violence. As much as students know the bully before an adult, they also play a critical role in helping to stop bullying in their school. As adults, it is our duty to help provide a safe school environment for all students. Working together with the school administration, teachers in addition to the student will help instill a “No bullying” zone and thus a safer school environment for our children.
