The Miss America Organization has been in existence since 1921 and over the course of time has developed into a vital program that empowers young women with the opportunity to achieve their professional goals. It is an amazing not-for-profit organization and one of the world’s largest providers of college scholarship funds for young women. Making available more than $45 million in cash and scholarships, it is not just for the handful of young women who become Miss America. It is available to the over 12,000 young women who compete in the state and local competitions as well.
Scholarships are a cornerstone of the program. When a young lady participates in the system, not only does it help pay for college and prepare her for a career, it also provides an opportunity to gain additional life experiences, work on issues of importance to society, enhance personal and professional skills and develop performance-related and other talents.

Shilah Phillips, a newcomer to competing in pageants, was working three jobs so she could pay for school. She entered our pageant program on the advice of a friend because she needed college funds assistance. Shilah won the title of Miss Frisco and competed at Miss Texas becoming the 2nd woman in the history of Miss Texas to win the state title on the first try. As the first African-American woman to represent the Lone Star State at Miss America, her competition at the national level proved to be highly successful. Shilah was awarded 1st Runner up to Miss America 2007 and ultimately from local pageant to national pageant, she walked away with over $40,000 in scholarship funds to complete her degree.
